Magnet density (mT) describes the magnetic field strength at each pole and how the pickup interacts with the strings.
Different magnet types have different ranges (e.g. Alnico ~30–65 mT, Ceramic ~60–90+ mT), and some variation is normal — even within the same pickup.
Typical pole-to-pole variation is ~5–15 mT.
Spread describes this:
Lower spread → more even response
Higher spread → more character and dynamics
Slugs → smoother field
Screws → more focused response

This humbucker exhibits an extremely balanced and refined electrical profile that strongly suggests a classic low-output PAF-inspired architecture with modern measurement precision. The relatively low 8.58kΩ series DCR combined with a substantial 5.51H inductance creates an unusually expressive tonal balance: warm and fluid in the mids, yet remarkably open and articulate in the upper register.
The individual coils are exceptionally well matched. Both coils sit around 4.3kΩ with nearly symmetrical winding distribution, which contributes to the pickup’s smooth phase interaction and highly coherent harmonic response in series mode. The South coil resonates slightly higher (4.67kHz no-load) and feels a touch more immediate and airy, while the North coil introduces a smoother upper-mid contour with a softer transient edge. Together they create a beautifully blended series voice with strong harmonic density and a very musical compression profile.
The loaded resonance behavior is particularly interesting. Even under 250k and 500k loading, the pickup maintains resonance around the 3kHz region, preserving clarity and articulation while avoiding excessive sharpness. The relatively low Q values in series mode (1.3–1.5 loaded) indicate a broad and smooth resonant peak rather than a piercing or overly aggressive top end. This gives the pickup an elegant “wide-band” response with excellent chord bloom and fluid lead articulation.
The AlNiCo 2 bar magnet plays a major role in the pickup’s feel. The measured magnetic field is intentionally moderate and extremely even across all poles (30mT throughout), producing a very controlled magnetic window with soft attack characteristics and highly natural sustain behavior. The screw/slugs configuration further enhances tonal dimensionality: the screw coil contributes focus and harmonic detail, while the slug coil adds smoothness and body. The result is a remarkably touch-sensitive response with outstanding dynamic tracking.
The winding structure also supports this character beautifully. The relatively modest ~5000–5200 turns per coil combined with 42 AWG polyurethane wire explains the pickup’s open top end, quick transient behavior, and highly transparent harmonic structure. Internal capacitance remains notably low overall, which contributes to the pickup’s unusually clear upper harmonics and spacious high-frequency response.
Overall, this is an exceptionally expressive and musical humbucker design that excels at dynamic articulation, harmonic richness, and nuanced playing feel. It delivers the refined openness of a vintage PAF platform while maintaining impressive clarity, balance, and responsiveness across the entire frequency spectrum.
