AlNiCo grades

AlNiCo 2 (A2) Softer magnetic pull, warmer mids and sweeter highs. Often associated with vintage blues and smoother attack feel.
AlNiCo 3 (A3) Lowest magnetic pull of the common Strat-style magnets. Produces open dynamics, softer bass and airy vintage response.
AlNiCo 5 (A5) Strongest traditional Strat-style magnet. Tighter lows, brighter attack and increased output with more aggressive response.

Pole top shape

Flat (F) Flat pole top with the most direct and immediate magnetic response.
Vintage bevel (VB) Small vintage-style bevel for a slightly softer and rounder attack feel.
Modern bevel (MB) Larger bevel with a smoother magnetic transition and more refined response.
Does it change tone? The effect is subtle compared to magnet type or coil winding โ€” but pole shape can slightly influence attack feel, pick response and perceived sharpness.
Flat poles Usually feel tighter, more focused and a little more immediate under the pick.
Beveled poles Tend to soften the edge of the attack slightly and can feel smoother or less aggressive.
Vintage bevels are inspired by old Fender-style finishing methods, while modern bevels are typically more consistent and polished.

Magnet dimensions

Magnet height Taller magnets usually create a stronger magnetic field and slightly higher output. Shorter magnets may feel softer and more open. 18mm is considered the most common modern Strat-style pole magnet height and works as a balanced all-purpose standard.
Magnet diameter Diameter changes the width and focus of the magnetic field. 5mm is the modern Strat-style standard used in most traditional single coil designs.

Polarity

North up vs south up doesnโ€™t change tone alone โ€” but it matters when combining pickups.

This is where phase relationships and hum cancellation come into play.

Things to consider

Magnet length & pickup height Longer magnets increase total pickup height. This can affect whether the pickup physically fits your guitar โ€” especially in shallow cavities or vintage-spec bodies.
Magnet length & tone Longer magnets often create a stronger magnetic field and slightly higher output. They can feel more focused and punchy, while shorter magnets may sound softer and more open.
Staggered pole pieces Staggered poles are used to balance string output โ€” especially on vintage Fender-style guitars where string radius and string gauges differ.
Why Strat pickups are staggered Originally designed for vintage string sets with a wound G string. The stagger compensates uneven volume between strings. With modern string sets, the effect may be different.
Flat pole pieces are often preferred with modern setups for more even response across all strings.

Uniform vs Individual configuration

Uniform mode All magnets use the same specification. This is the traditional and most common pickup construction method.
Individual mode Each pole magnet or slug can be configured separately for experimental magnetic balancing and fully custom stagger designs.

Steel slugs

In bar magnet pickups, the steel slugs transfer magnetic energy from the bar magnet to the strings.

What it really changes

Thinner wire allows more turns in the same space. More turns increase output โ€” but also shift the frequency response and reduce openness.

Winding approach

No uniform layers. No mechanical repetition. Just controlled variation.

Scatter wound The coil is wound with intentional irregularity. This creates a more complex electromagnetic response, resulting in a tone that feels more open, dynamic and alive.

Perfect consistency isnโ€™t always the goal โ€” musical response is.

DC resistance

Often used as a reference โ€” but it doesnโ€™t tell the full story. Two pickups with the same resistance can sound very different depending on wire type and winding.

Use it as a guideline, not a rule.

Winding direction

The coil can be wound clockwise or counterclockwise. On its own, this does not significantly change the tone โ€” but it becomes critical when combining pickups.

Why it matters Winding direction affects phase and hum cancelling. Combined incorrectly, pickups can sound thin or out of phase.

Hum cancelling (RWRP)

Noise is cancelled when two pickups have:

This is known as Reverse Wound, Reverse Polarity (RWRP).

Stratocaster The middle pickup is usually RWRP, creating hum-cancelling positions in 2 and 4.

Humbucker principle

A humbucker uses two coils with opposite winding and polarity to cancel noise while keeping a full signal.

Coil split

One coil is turned off, leaving a single coil active. This gives a brighter, more open tone โ€” but removes hum cancelling.

Dummy coil

A dummy coil cancels noise without acting as a full pickup. It allows single coil tone with reduced hum โ€” but always with some tonal impact.

How it works The dummy coil is wound and connected to cancel hum, but balanced so it contributes as little signal as possible.
Coil balance One coil carries the main signal, while the second coil is reduced to act mainly as a noise canceller.
Example (humbucker-style) The main coil may have around 7,000โ€“8,500 turns, while the dummy coil can have significantly fewer โ€” typically around 2,000โ€“4,000 turns.

The goal is balance: enough winding to cancel hum, but not enough to dominate the tone.
